John A. Endler regards himself as a 19th century natural historian using 21st century techniques. He is interested in the origins and maintenance of geographic variation in spite of gene flow, the environmental causes of natural selection, the interaction between natural selection and sexual selection, and the effects of the sensory environment on the function and evolution of signals and signal detection, especially with respect to colour patterns. He has worked on guppies, frogs, lizards and bowerbirds. He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Sciences and an Exemplar of the Animal Behaviour Society.
